Bb Blues Turnaround 3

So far we've taken a look at the "minor third turn" on two different sets of strings: 1-4 and 2-5. This month's concept gets back to the former. One effective way to vary a turnaround is to alternate voicings. Take a look at the following example. All of the chords are 13ths; however, Bb13 has the root on top, while Db13 has the 9th on top. Same for C13 and B13. The result is easy to do but highly effective in producing cool sounds and increasing you versatility. As I suggested last month, try this on your own by picking a dominant chord and putttin it through its paces. Use your ear. If a particular chords doesn't sound right, try another one. Lots of turnarounds are featured in All Blues For Jazz Guitar--Comping Styles, Chords & Grooves. There's more, which we'll explore next month. See you then.
